William Tecumseh Sherman was an American soldier, merchant, educator, and author who lived from 1820 to 1891. During the American Civil War (1861-1865), he served as a General in the Union Army, receiving praise for his superb mastery of military strategy as well as criticism for the harshness of the scorched earth methods he enacted in conducting total war against the Confederate States.
