Memories of My Life in a Polish Village by Toby Fluek

A picture book depicting the first-hand experiences of a Polish woman whose Jewish family endured suffering and upheaval during the Russian and Nazi intervention of World War II. The story starts with a very poor peasant childhood in a Shtetl, a Jewish village in the Polish countryside. There are pictures of Toby's family, of the daily household routines, ironing with a hot-coal iron, making potato soup, the neighbours, plucking geese - and of the sabbath, the day of rest. Then comes September 1939 and following the German invasion, the Russian occupation of Eastern Poland. The Russians make their presence felt by teaching communism at school and setting up youth brigades.
