Memories of the Warwickshire Coalfields by David Bell

What life was like as a coal miner before, during and after the Miners' Strike of 1984 - 1985. The many interviews and photoraphs give a remarkable insight into the lives of those who worked in the Warwickshire collieries. When the country's coal mines were nationalised in 1947, there were nineteen collieries in the Warwickshire coalfield. Just ten years later, there were only twelve but whilst many were closing, a new one was being sunk - Daw Mill, in the north-west of the county. It is one of only three deep mines still producing in Great Britain today. it employs over 600 men but in the 21st century is completely mechanised and computerised - a far cry from the conditions experienced by many of the miners who talked to author David Bell about this book. Their memories which they have shared with David, together with the many superb photographs in the book, give the reader a remarkable insight into the lives of those who worked in the Warwickshire collieries during the recent past.
