Mighty Be Our Powers by Carol Mithers

WINNER OF THE 2011 NOBEL PEACE PRIZE I n a time of death and terror, Leymah Gbowee brought Liberia's women together- and together they led a nation to peace. As a young woman, Leymah Gbowee was broken by the Liberian civil war, a brutal conflict that tore apart her life and claimed the lives of countless relatives and friends. Years of fighting destroyed her country- and shattered Gbowee's girlhood hopes and dreams. As a young mother trapped in a nightmare of domestic abuse, she found the courage to turn her bitterness into action, propelled by her realization that it is women who suffer most during conflicts- and that the power of women working together can create an unstoppable force. In 2003, the passionate and charismatic Gbowee helped organize and then led the Liberian Mass Action for Peace, a coalition of Christian and Muslim women who sat in public protest, confronting Liberia's ruthless president and rebel warlords, and even held a sex strike. With an army of women, Gbowee helped lead her nation to peace- in the process emerging as an international leader who changed history. Mighty Be Our Powers is the gripping chronicle of a journey from hopelessness to empowerment that will touch all who dream of a better world.

Leymah Gbowee, a Liberian peace campaigner, certified social worker, and women's rights champion, was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2011. She is the creator and current President of the Gbowee Peace Foundation Africa, the founding head of the Liberia Reconciliation Initiative, and the co-founder and former Executive Director of Women Peace and Security Network Africa (WIPSEN-A). She is also the Executive Director of the Earth Institute's Women, Peace and Security Program. She is also a founder member of the Women in Peacebuilding Network/West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WIPNET/WANEP) and the former Liberian Coordinator. She travels the world to promote human rights and peace and security. Gbowee's leadership of the Women of Liberia Mass Action for Peace -- a nonviolent organization that played a key part in ending Liberia's civil war in 2003 -- is documented in her memoir, Mighty Be Our Powers, and the award-winning documentary, Pray the Devil Back to Hell.

Gbowee has a master's degree. Eastern Mennonite University (Harrisonburg, Virginia) awarded him a master's degree in conflict transformation, as well as honorary doctorates in law from Rhodes University in South Africa and the University of Alberta in Canada. Gbowee has held renowned fellowships at Barnard College and Union Theological Seminary, and advises various organizations working for peace, women's rights, youth, and sustainable development. The Millennium Excellence Foundation awarded Gbowee the Lifetime Africa Achievement Award (LAAP) for Peace in Africa in 2016.

Gbowee is a United Nations Sustainable Development Goals Advocate and a member of the International Refugee Council. In 2017, UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon appointed Gbowee to the UN Secretary-General's High Level Advisory Group on Mediation. She was named to the Secretariat of the Gender Equality Advisory Council for Canada's G7 Presidency in 2018. Leymah is the mother of eight wonderful children.
