This booklet focuses on the Church. For all its high calling to be the Body of Christ, manifesting the life and love of God to the world, it rarely matches up to this ideal. The title is taken from a well-known parody of Onward Christian Soldiers - 'Like a mighty tortoise, moves the church of God, Brothers we are treading where we've always trod'.
JANE WILLIAMS taught theology at Trinity College Bristol and is now visiting lecturer at King's College, London. A regular contributor to the Church Times, she is married to Rowan Williams
