Miller's Ceramics Buyer's Guide by John Sandon

The all-new, all-colour, essential practical reference work to identifying and valuing ceramics, both pottery and porcelain. Ceramics is always a hugely popular field due to the sheer choice available, ranging from rare antique porcelain all the way through to more modern and colourful character-based figures that hold a high nostalgia value for their collectors as well as now being capable of reaching relatively high prices. Over 2,500 examples of European and North American pottery and porcelain are described and illustrated in colour in this informative guide. For ease of reference, the book is divided into different collecting categories - Collecting by Type and Decoration, by Maker, by Country of Origin, and by Shape. The most popular periods are covered, including 18th-century English porcelain, Art Deco, Art Pottery, and the post-war period. Specific factories discussed range from Sevres to Royal Crown Derby, and all kinds of shapes from inkwells to Toby jugs are featured. British, American, Scandinavian, German, and even Russian ceramics are covered.Practical guidance on collecting is provided throughout, and a useful index to advertisers, a directory of restorers and specialists, a glossary, and a bibliography are also included.
John Sandon has had an interest in porcelain from an early age, inherited from his father, Henry Sandon - another prominent figure in the antique ceramics world. John went to work at Phillips in London over twenty-five years ago and soon established himself as a porcelain specialist. He is now director of the international ceramics and glass departments at Bonhams. John has written a number of books on the subject, such as Miller's Collecting Porcelain, as well as articles for magazines such as BBC Homes and Antiques, and he is a contributor to the annual Miller's Antiques Price Guide. He is best known for his regular appearances as a porcelain expert on the BBC's Antiques Roadshow.
