Eliza Leslie was the daughter of a Philadelphia watchmaker who was a personal friend of Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson. She was known as Miss Leslie. Her debut cookbook, published in her fortieth year, was followed by over a dozen more, all of which were republished numerous times, making her the most famous and well-known cookbook author of the nineteenth century. She also wrote etiquette and children's books, and she curated The Gift, an annual gift book that featured works by prominent writers of the day, including Henry Wadworth Longfellow.
