On August 19, 1943, two days after the famous Schweinfurt-Regensburg raid, bombers and fighters of the U.S. Eighth Air Force launched attacks against German airfields in Holland a mission they thought would be easy, a so-called milk run, but it proved to be anything but.
Ivo de Jong, an officer in the Dutch army, has been an international fellow at the U.S. Army War College. He has researched the Eighth Air Force for nearly twenty years and lives in Holland.
