The Modernized King's Indian - Averbakh Variation by Jan Boekelman
The Averbakh is a solid and respectable variation against the KID. It bears the name of the well-known Soviet grandmaster, theorist, and endgame specialist Averbakh (photo). Yuri Lvovich Averbakh is the oldest living grandmaster who recently celebrated his 99th birthday in Moscow on 8 February. In the early 1950s, Averbakh was one of the first grandmasters to play the variation more than once. He contributed greatly to the development of its theory. Jan Boekelman is a Dutch chess enthusiast and theorist. In his younger years he
participated in the Dutch Youth Championships, the Open Dutch Championships and
he played a number of years in a team in the Dutch national league.
In those years he wrote theoretical articles for the
New in Chess magazine and its predecessor Schaakbulletin. After a long stay outside
the Netherlands, Jan has picked up chess again. He now focuses mainly on
opening analyses.
