The president and CEO of Scandinavia Airlines (SAS) shows how to adapt to the new customer-driven economy.
Jan Carlzon was born in the Swedish town of Nykoping in 1941. Following his M.B.A., he went on to pursue a career in management consulting. He joined Vingresor, Sweden's largest tour operator, as a product manager and later as head of marketing after graduating from the Stockholm School of Economics in 1967. He was named managing director of Vingresor at the age of 32 in 1974, when the package-tour industry was in a tailspin due to the first energy crisis, and quickly reversed the company's economic collapse. He became managing director of Linjeflyg, Sweden's main domestic airline, in 1978, and resident and chief executive officer of SAS, the consortium of Denmark, Norway, and Sweden's national airlines, in 1981.
Within a year, his leadership at Linjeflyg and SAS transformed large economic losses into substantial profits. Carlzon is frequently asked to deliver presentations and interviews about leadership and customer-focused business methods all over the world.
