Hattie Ellis won the Derek Cooper Prize for investigative writing in 2008 for her book Planet Chicken; her book Sweetness & Light: The Secret History of the Honeybee examined the natural and social history of food; her research for Best of British Fish (Winner, Guild of Food Writers' Award) taught her about fishing and marine ecology; and her book Feeding England delved into social history and farming. She's also researched various diets at television and worked for Maggie's Cancer Care Centres, where she investigated the links between food and health. She contributes to the Saturday Telegraph, the Guardian's G2 food pages, the Times magazine, the FT Weekend, Time Out, Waitrose Food Illustrated, Kew Gardens magazine, and the BBC's website, among other publications.
