Techniques to help riders fine-tune their communication and riding skills

This follow-up to How Your Horse Wants You to Ride helps intermediate to advanced riders improve their communication with their mounts and polish their overall riding skills. Readers get a complete tutorial-much of which can be found nowhere else-on taking their riding skills to the next level.

For over 60 years, Gincy Self Bucklin has been teaching horseback riding. Her students have included recreational riders of various ages and abilities, many of whom have also competed effectively and some of whom have gone on to become pros. While many experienced instructors exclusively teach expert riders, Gincy has worked with beginners and intermediates extensively, believing that in order to be successful at the higher level, riders must first master the fundamentals. She currently collaborates with educators to share the teaching techniques she outlines in her books. Margaret Cabell Self, a well-known equestrian author, was Gincy's mother.

Sally Swift, George Morris, and Nuno Oliveira were among the numerous world-class instructors and clinicians Gincy had access to as a child. While the cavalry, where most of the equine knowledge was acquired, was still in existence in the 1920s and 1930s, some of her early instructors trained with European trainers. Gincy is a retired Centered Riding instructor and a level IV instructor with the American Riding Instructors Association. Since 1987, Gincy has been writing about horses and riding.

What Your Horse Wants You to Know, How Your Horse Wants You to Ride, and More How Your Horse Wants You to Ride are among her books. She has written for national horse publications such as Equus and Horse Illustrated. She currently writes a regular piece for Riding Instructor, the American Riding Instructors Association's (ARIA) quarterly newspaper, and has her own website, http://whatyourhorsewants.com. Gincy is a Vermonter who lives in East Dummerston.
