Moscow Racetrack by Anatoly Gladilin
Moscow Racetrack is the story of the disillusioned Teacher, a habitue of the track, who one day lucks into big winnings. The KGB, who already had their eye on the Teacher because of his anti-Soviet essays on Russian history that are circulating in samizdat, sends the lucky winner and his pal to Paris, so they can test their skills on foreign turf and earn some hard currency for the impoverished Soviet government.
"'Penetrating, illuminating, cynical and fascinating, Moscow Racetrack is not only the study of a committed gambler's mind (betters will love it)It is also the microcosm of modern Russia' New York Times"
Anatoly Gladilin (born 1935) made one of the most startling debuts in modern Russian literature with the publication of his The Chronicle of the Times of Viktor Podgursky in 1956. His work ushered in he movement known as Young Prose, whose members included Vassily Aksyonov and Vladimir Voinovich. Gladilin was forced to emigrate in 1976 to Paris, where he now lives.
