Like so many of his generation, Ian Berry was first introduced to the joys of motocross when, in company with his family, he tuned in to the BBC Grandstand programme. There he discovered a fast-moving, captivating sport, and was immediately hooked as he listened to the incomparable Murray Walker providing the frenetic commentary that complimented the remarkable display of riding skills on display. This 'baptism' clearly had a lasting effect on the youngster, who would go on to attend meetings in his native East Anglia at such time-honoured venues as Wakes Colne, Cadders Hill, Lyng and Hadleigh during the heyday of the sport in the 1960s and 70s. Indeed it was memories of such happy outings, rekindled by watching VHS compilations of racing from this period, that prompted him to try his hand at writing. This was in the late 1990s and the rest, as they say, is history! The photo shows Ian at the launch of his first book Out FRONT! in 2010.
