Moustache Man by Rick Senley
In an outrageous and ironic take on the Victorian murder mystery, Moustache Man tells the tragic tale of one man's descent from a dishy fellow about town to a vagabond in the wretched underbelly of Victorian London. After falling in love with Sally, a loose and chesty strumpet plucked like a chicken from the shadows of the Haymarket, our hero accidentally spends everything he owns on whores, opium, beef and booze until, his mind pickled with port and melancholy, he loses everything he has ever known in his life. But as he seeks to regain his love from the foggy mysteries of fate, the city's queerest types are butchered one by one, until, forced to flee his lodgings, he becomes one of the doomed souls within London's most dismal slum. Mistaken for a doctor when he inadvertently cures a youngster's constipation, his adventures take him from gaudy gin palaces to upper-class supper clubs, Chinese opium dens, Newgate Prison, a coroner's bedroom and a railway carriage. But when life finally catches up with him, will he be able to redeem his conscience for his past?
Rick Senley is a 36-year-old photojournalist who has been arrested late at night in several countries. He writes for FHM and Loaded as well as less classy publications such as the Observer - he'll tackle any subject except landscape gardening and cars and will take pictures of anything that will not bite him. He plays squash and the zither, occasionally works at the Old Bailey and resents living in London.
