Summary

Fisherman stories are notoriously economical with the truth, but tales even taller than "the one that got away" enliven the bar parlour of the Anglers' Rest when Mr Mulliner holds court to a fireside audience. This book is a collection of some of these stories.

The Mr Mulliner Omnibus by Pg Wodehouse

Fishermen stories are notoriously economical with the truth, but tales even taller than those about 'the one that got away' enliven the bar parlour of the Anglers' Rest when Mr Mulliner holds court to a fireside audience of assembled Draught Stouts and Double-Whiskey-and-splashes. Here you can sample Mulliner's famous all-purpose tonic Buck-U-Uppo, suffer the pangs of love with his burgeoning tribe of nephews and nieces, enjoy a tipple with the Bishop's cat Webster, and generally savour the funniest short stories since P.G. Wodehouse laid down his pen. Wodehouse himself writes: 'I must warn my public that in The Mr Mulliner Omnibus I am writing as funny as I can, and I can only hope there will be no ill results...A word of warning. As regards the medium dose for an adult, I would recommend not more than two or perhaps three stories a day, taken at breakfast or before retiring. Don't try to read the whole book straight through just so as to say you've done it. Nervous people and invalids will of course be guided by their doctors' advice.'
"You don't analyse such sunlit perfection, you just bask in its warmth and splendour" -- Stephen Fry "The greatest comic writer ever" Douglas Adams "The funniest writer ever to put words to paper" -- Hugh Laurie "PG. Wodehouse wrote the best English comic novels of the century" -- Sebastian Faulks "Sublime comic genius" -- Ben Elton
The author of almost a hundred books and the creator of Jeeves, Blandings Castle, Psmith, Ukridge, Uncle Fred and Mr Mulliner, P.G. Wodehouse was born in 1881 and educated at Dulwich College. After two years with the Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank he became a full-time writer, contributing to a variety of periodicals. As well as his novels and short stories, he wrote lyrics for musical comedies, and at one stage had five shows running simultaneously on Broadway. At the age of 93, in the New Year's Honours List of 1975, he received a long-overdue Knighthood, only to die on St Valentine's Day some 45 days later.
