Murder on the Red River by Marcie R Rendon

Set in 1970s along Red River Valley, Marcie R. Rendon's gripping new mystery follows the life of a young Ojibwe woman as she struggles to come to terms with the callous murder of a Native American stranger, bringing to life the gritty, dark reality of a flawed foster care system and the oppression of indigenous people.

Renee Cash Blackbear, a 19-year-old, tough-as-nails, resilient Ojibwe woman, has lived all her life in Fargo, sister city to Minnesota's Moorhead, just downriver from the Cities. Her life revolves around driving truck for local farmers, drinking beer, playing pool, smoking cigarettes, and solving criminal investigations through the power of her visions. She has one friend, Sheriff Wheaton, who's also her guardian and helped her out of the broken foster care system. Together they must work to solve a murder across cultures in a rural Midwest community layered in racism, genocide, and oppression.

This critically acclaimed series debut, winner of the Pinckley Prize and nominated for the Sue Grafton Memorial Award, brings Cash Blackbear to Soho Crime along with Marcie R. Rendon's full crime backlist and future publications of new books in the Cash Blackbear Mystery series.

Marcie Rendon is a White Earth Nation citizen. She was the first Native American woman to receive the McKnight Distinguished Artist award, which she received in 2020. Girl Gone Lost, published by Cinco Puntos Publications, is the second installment in the Cash Blackbear series. Murder on the Red River (2017 Cinco Puntos Publishing), which won the Pinckley Women's Debut Crime Novel Award in 2018, was the first. It was a Spur Award Finalist in the Contemporary Novel category from the Western Writers of America in 2018.

Pow Wow Summer (MN Historical Press) and Farmer's Market: Families Working Together (CarolRhoda) are two nonfiction children's books. Rendon was named a Minnesota AARP and POLLEN 50 Over 50 Change-maker in 2018. She is the brains of Raving Native Theater, with four published plays to her credit. She curates community-created performance, such as Art Is...CreativeNativeResilience, which aired on TPT Public Television in June 2019 and features three Anishinabe performance artists.

Rendon was highlighted in Oprah Magazine's 31 Native American Writers to Read Right Now: Rendon's Cash Blackbear series are captivating vehicles that reveal wider stories about the historical mistreatment of American Indians. Diego Vazquez and Rendon received the Loft's 2017 Spoken Word Immersion Fellowship for their work with women jailed in county jails.
