Mutiny on Board the HMS "Bounty" by William Bligh

William Bligh's account of the fatal voyage of the bounty, and his subsequent 3,600-mile trip to Timor in an open boat. Bligh was not the tyrant of legend--in fact, he may have been one of the most lenient commanders of a Pacific exploration ship of that period.

Vice-Admiral William Bligh FRS was a British Royal Navy commander and colonial governor who served from 9 September 1754 to 7 December 1817. The Mutiny on the Bounty took place at 1789 while Bligh was in command of HMS Bounty; after being set adrift in Bounty's launch by the mutineers, Bligh and his faithful men arrived in Timor after a 3,618 nautical mile (6,701 km; 4,164 mi) trip. He was appointed Governor of New South Wales in Australia on 13 August 1806, fifteen years after the Bounty mutiny, with orders to straighten up the corrupt rum trade of the New South Wales Corps. The so-called Rum Rebellion erupted as a result of Bligh's anti-trade efforts, during which the New South Wales Corps arrested him and removed him from command on January 26, 1808, an act later pronounced illegal by the British Foreign Office. On December 7, 1817, he died in Lambeth, London.
