My Mother's House by Lily Tobias

Simon is a troubled young man. born in Wales, of Jewish heritage, and in love with an English heiress. He determines to reject his Jewish and Welsh identity and the industrial valleys he grew up in and seeks to fulfil his ambition in the Civil Service. When life turns out not to meet his expectations, he rejects his lover and takes up arms in the fight against England's enemies in the Great War. Lily Tobias' sensitive individual and communal portraits illuminate some of the most topical personal, social and political issues of the 21st century.
Lily Tobias grew up in Ystalyfera in the Swansea valley. Her parents were Jewish immigrants from Poland. She was a committed pacifist and two of her brothers were conscientious objectors. Author of four novels and a short story collection, Tobias also contributed regularly to the Jewish press in the UK and Israel, and was the first to adapt Daniel Deronda for the stage. Jasmine Donahaye is author of the monograph Whose People? Wales, Israel, Palestine, a study of Welsh and Jewish cultural interactions.
