My Rock; My Refuge by Timothy Keller

New York pastor Timothy Keller is known for his ability to connect a deep understanding of the Bible with contemporary thought and the practical issues we all face in our lives. My Rock; My Refuge - his first devotional, consisting of all new material - offers inspiration for every day of the year, based on the book of Psalms. Here Keller helps readers apply the principles he laid out in his book Prayer: Experiencing Awe and Intimacy with God. He walks them verse by verse through the entire Psalter, the one biblical book designed to teach us how to pray, how to spiritually handle every possible life situation, and how to actually know God. This title is published in the US as The Songs of Jesus. My Rock; My Refuge won CRT Devotional Book of the Year in 2016.
Here is a daily devotional book which will undoubtedly widen the horizons and the hopes of readers, through some of the finest religious poetry (which is what the Psalms are) ever written, a pinnacle of Jewish worship which all Christians can share* The Irish Catholic *
In "A year of daily devotions in the Psalms" - My Rock; My Refuge (Hodder and Stoughton, hardback, £12.99) - founder of Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Man- hattan, USA, Timothy Keller, with Kathy Keller, has adapted the 150 Psalms - what Martin Luther dubbed "a mini Bible" - into 365 daily readings. While the author accepts that the Psalms are the "divinely inspired devotional book", he maintains that most readers need the help of a guide, if only on an initial reading, and so each daily quotation from a Psalm is accompanied by a reflection and a prayer. Five pages of notes list the many sources drawn upon for this supporting material, including C S Lewis, George Herbert, John Newton and Charles Wesley. * The Methodist Recorder *
Each devotion is for a specific date... a passage from a psalm is printed in full, followed by a brief meditation... readers of the book are advised to use it to prompt their keeping of a daily prayer journal. * The Church Times *

Timothy Keller was born in Pennsylvania and educated at Bucknell University, Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, and Westminster Theological Seminary. He became a Christian at university, was ordained by the Presbyterian Church in America and worked as a pastor for nine years. He was asked to start Redeemer Presbyterian Church in Manhattan in 1989, and under his leadership the church's congregation experienced unprecedented growth from 50 to 5,000 members. His target audience consisted mainly of urban professionals, whom he believed exhibit disproportionate influence over the culture and its ideas. The 'Influentials' Issue of New York Magazine featured Dr Keller as "the most successful Christian evangelist in the city by recognizing that young professionals and artists are 'disproportionately influential' in creating the country's culture and that you have to meet this coveted demographic on its own terms." Timothy Keller is renowned for his clear, reasoned approach to Christian apologetics and his book THE REASON FOR GOD: BELIEF IN AN AGE OF SCEPTICISM was named Book of the Year for 2008 by World Magazine. Timothy Keller died in May 2023. His wife Kathy and sons live in New York City.
