My War Diary 1914-1918 by Ethel M Bilbrough

Part scrapbook, part memoir, this wonderfully colourful and eloquent diary brims with vivid observations, providing a rare snapshot of what life was like on the Home Front during the First World War.
Ethel M. Bilbrough and her husband Kenneth lived at Elmstead Grange in Chislehurst, Kent. Kenneth was the third son of Arthur Bilbrough, the marine insurance company that still bears his name. A keen amateur watercolorist and compiler of hymn books, Ethel channelled her creative talents into her beautifully kept diary during the war years. The Bilbroughs left Elmstead Grange in 1940 and today the house survives as a private school called Babington House.
