Mychal's Prayer by Donna Leonard
Have you ever known an eccentric person who made such an indelible impression you were inspired to tell their story? Savadio was just such a person. Based on true events occurring during the Great Depression in Waterbury, Connecticut, a book idea formed as the author began to write his tale. In this young adult, historical fiction novel, fourteen-year old Fredo Ponterutto tries hard to be accepted by family and friends. Conflicts regarding money, his papa's expectations and neighborhood thug, Donato, have left him feeling insecure and fearful. Savadio, the hired hand who works for the Ponteruttos wears a long black coat, has unexplained scars and is the only one that gives Fredo the attention he lacks. Fredo's hero worship for the eccentric man inspires him to spy on Savadio to find out the answers to his mysterious life. Fredo vows to uncover Savadio's secrets as he begins a journey full of peril. An accident, a bank robbery and trouble with Donato lead him to answer all of Savadio's Secrets. What is Savadio hiding in his coat? Why does he make frequent visits to the cemetery? Who is 'My Lady of the Boat'? Where did Savadio get his scars? What does Fredo find in Savadio's coat? His unexpected discoveries reveal a surprise ending with a twist proving life is not always as it seems and changes his life forever.
