Hornedjitef's mummy, buried with expensive amulets and jewellery inside two elaborate decorated coffins, has been intensively studied and modern, non-destructive methods such as CT-scanning have revealed a great deal about his age, his health when he was alive, and how he was mummified. Author Joyce Filer is one of the experts who have spent years unravelling the mysteries of Hornedjitef and other mummies, and she has a first-hand knowledge of his story.
Joyce Filer is an Egyptologist and palaeopathologist specializing in the study of Ancient Egyptian and other human remains. She worked for many years as a Special Assistant in the Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan in The British Museum and is also an experienced teacher. She is the author of The Egyptian Bookshelf: Disease (BMP 1995).
