In this sixth edition, published in two volumes, greater attention has been paid to women authors, such as Aphra Behn, whose "Oroonoko" is included. The anthology is presented in a new format and all supporting material is brought up to date.Abrams (1912–2015) was Emeritus Professor of English at Cornell University and a member of the Class of 1916. For The Mirror and the Lamp, he received the Phi Beta Kappa Christian Gauss Award, as well as the MLA's James Russell Lowell Prize for Natural Supernaturalism. The Milk of Paradise, A Dictionary of Literary Words, The Correspondent Breeze, and Doing Things with Texts are among his other works. He has received Guggenheim, Ford, and Rockefeller Postwar fellowships, as well as the Academy of Arts and Sciences' Prize in Humanistic Studies (1984), the Keats-Shelley Society's Distinguished Scholar Medal (1987), and the American Academy of Arts and Letters' Award for Literature (1990). The Mirror and the Lamp was selected twenty-fifth among the 100 best nonfiction books written in English during the twentieth century by the Modern Library in 1999.
