The National Army Museum Book of the Boer War by Michael Carver
The book quotes extensively from the Museum's unpublished archive of diaries, letters and documents, giving a depiction of Britain's first modern war through the authentic voice of the combatant, and a new perspective to the Boer War.
Field Marshal Lord Carver's career in the British Army started in 1935 in the Royal Tank Corps and has taken him all over the world. In the Second World War, he commanded a tank battalion and an armored brigade while still in his twenties. After the war, he commanded an infantry brigade and a division, held many important posts on the staff, and became Commander-in-Chief Far East in 1967, Chief of the General Staff in 1971, and Chief of the Defense Staff between 1973 and 1976.
