Native Stones by D Craig
Magnificent. . . The subtitle, 'A Book about Climbing', is economical with the truth - it is a book about politics, literature, theology, nature, technology, ambition, fear- about being a parent, child and colleague- about clinging to the rock face of life itself. Craig's prose is passionate and supple- it renders abstract ideas and physical sensations with equal sharpness and conviction. This is no more a book 'for' mountaineers than MOBY DICK is a book 'for' whale fisherman. . . Invincibly happy and sane. I wish everyone would read it. ' Jonathan Raban, OBSERVER. 'An instantly recognisable classic. . . Craig balances words, like rock angels dancing on the point of an aiguille. ' NEW SOCIETY
