The Nature of the English Revolution by John Morrill
John Morrill has been at the forefront of modern attempts to explain the origins, nature and consequences of the English Revolution. These twenty essays -- seven either specially written or reproduced from generally inaccessible sources -- illustrate the main scholarly debates to which he has so richly contributed: the tension between national and provincial politics; the idea of the English Revolution as the last of the European Wars of Religion''; its British dimension; and its political sociology. Taken together, they offer a remarkably coherent account of the period as a whole. After forty years of teaching British, Irish, and European history at Cambridge, John Morrill resigned in 2013. The long historical relationship between England, Ireland, Scotland, and Wales, situated in a European comparative framework, has piqued my curiosity. He is a member of the British Academy and an Honorary Member of both the Royal Irish Academy and the Academy of Finland. He has written and edited more than twenty books and published more than 100 essays and articles.
