
Michael J. Crawford earned A.B. and A.M. degrees in history at Washington University in his native city of St. Louis, Missouri, and a Ph.D. in American History at Boston University. He subsequently taught in the History Department at Texas Tech University and served a fellowship in historical documentary editing at the Adams Papers at the Massachusetts Historical Society. In 1982 he joined the staff of the Naval Historical Center, now the Naval History and Heritage Command (NHHC), and he serves today as NHHC's Senior Historian. He edits the award-winning series Naval Documents of the American Revolution and The Naval War of 1812: A Documentary History. Dr. Crawford has written and edited numerous works on the religious as well as the naval history of early America. In 2008, the board of directors of the USS Constitution Museum bestowed on him its Samuel Eliot Morison award in recognition of his scholarly contributions to maritime history.
