Geboren am 13.7.1816 in Kreuzburg / Schlesien; gestorben am 30.4.1895 in Wiesbaden. Freytag entstammte einer Honoratiorenfamilie, der Vater war Arzt und Bürgermeister. Nach dem Besuch des Gymnasiums in Oels studierte er Philologie in Breslau (bei Hoffmann von Fallersleben) und Berlin. Von 1839 bis 1847 war er Privatdozent in Breslau. 1848 übernahm er die Schriftleitung der Leipziger Zeitschrift Die Grenzboten, die er zum damals führenden nationalliberalen Organ Deutschlands machte. Seit Anfang der 50er Jahre war er mit Herzog Ernst II. von Sachsen-Coburg und Gotha befreundet, der ihm 1854 den Hofratstitel verlieh. 1867 gewann er in einem thüringischen Wahlkreis ein Mandat als Abgeordneter im Reichstag des Norddeutschen Bundes, zog sich aber 1870 aus dem politischen Leben zurück. 1870/71 nahm er als Berichterstatter im Hauptquartier des preußischen Kronprinzen am deutsch-französichen Krieg teil.
