Neurodivergent Pride #1: Autistic Pride in a Neurophobic World (Real World) by Joe Biel

The R-word has been used against us as hate speech for decades. It's time to own this word for ourselves. Queer punks were told that they would be accepted as soon as they acted like straight people. Autism now occupies a similar place in the public consciousness at this moment: no one understands it. These stories of overcoming and disputing myths will become the roots of the new autistic pride movement and the people who have suffered under the R-word should own it.

Joe Biel is a self-made publisher and filmmaker who leans on punk rock for his inspiration, methods, and beginnings. He is the co-founder of the Portland Zine Symposium and the founder/manager of Microcosm Publications. He has been featured in Time Magazine, Publisher's Weekly, Utne Reader, Portland Mercury, Oregonian, Broken Pencil, Readymade, Punk Planet, Profane Existence, Spectator (Japan), G33K (Korea), and Maximum Rocknroll with his films on the Dinner and Bikes program. He is the author of several books, including Good Trouble: Creating a Successful Life and Business on the Spectrum, Manspressions: Interpreting Men's Conduct, The CIA Makes Science Fiction Unexciting, Beyond the Music, Bamboozled, Bipedal, By Pedal, and others. He is the filmmaker of the Groundswell film series including the documentaries Aftermass: Biking in a Post-Critical Mass Portland, If It Ain't Cheap, It Ain't Punk, Of Dice & Men, $100 & A T-Shirt.

Biel was not trained in education, according to the Journal of Adolescent & Adult Literacy. Joebiel.net is where you may find his work.
