New Collected Poems by W S Graham

From his first publications in the early 1940s, to his final works of the late 1970s, W. S. Graham has given us a poetry of intense power and inquisitive vision - a body of work regarded by many as among the best Romantic poetry of the twentieth century. Graham died in 1986 with much of his work gathered in Collected Poems 1942-1977. However, two posthumous collections - Uncollected Poems (1990) and Aimed at Nobody (1993) - have unearthed a wealth of important new material and heightened the need to retell the full publication story. This New Collected Poems, edited by poet and Graham scholar Matthew Francis and with a foreword by Douglas Dunn, offers the broadest picture yet of Graham's work.
W. S. Graham was born in Greenock in 1918 and lived most of his adult life in Cornwall. His first book of poems, Cage Without Grievance, was published in 1942, and his original Collected Poems in 1979. Two further books, Uncollected Poems (1990) and Aimed at Nobody (1993), were published after his death in 1986. Matthew Francis is the author of three Faber collections: Blizzard and Dragons were both shortlisted for the Forward Prize; Mandeville, his most recent collection, was published in 2008. He is editor of W. S. Graham's New Collected Poems and has also published a study of Graham, Where the People Are, and a novel, WHOM. In 2004 he was named as one of the Next Generation Poets. He is Reader in Creative Writing at the University of Wales, Aberystwyth, and lives in West Wales with his wife, Creina.
