Alain Leroy Locke was an American writer, philosopher, educator, and patron of the arts who lived from 1885 until 1954. Locke was the philosophical architect -- and the acknowledged Dean -- of the Harlem Renaissance, having been named the first African American Rhodes Scholar in 1907.
