What sets space opera apart from other fiction is its sheer scale: it is an exuberant celebration of the very large and the very small, of the very old and the very new, of the vast, panoramic instant we live in; the instant in which everything that went before melds with everything yet to be. It is Star Wars and Battlestar Galactica.
The only book of its kind, The New Space Opera brings together for the first time the generation of writers who spawned and embody the "new space opera, " aswell as other talents destined to join their ranks. Going beyond everything that has come before, this fresh, visionary anthology is essential reading for every science fiction fan.
Jonathan Strahan has edited over forty books, including the Locus and Aurealis award-winning anthologies The Starry Rift, Life on Mars, and The New Space Opera (Vols. 1 & 2), and The Locus Awards (co-written with Charles N. Brown), as well as the anthology series Eclipse and the Best Science Fiction and Fantasy of the Year. In 2010, he received the World Fantasy Award for editing, and he has been nominated for the Hugo Award for editing four times. For his criticism and review, he has won the Aurealis Award three times, the Ditmar Award five times, and the William Atheling Award. Since 2002, he has served as the reviews editor for Locus: The Magazine of Science Fiction and Fantasy.
