Author and photographer Catherine Wanek organized the building of a straw bale greenhouse in 1992 and has been an advocate for straw bale construction ever since. Her first book, The Art of Natural Building, was published in 2002. Wanek lives in Kingston, New Mexico.

Catherine Wanek is a member of the Builders Without Borders board of directors. She is the author and photographer of The Hybrid House and The New Straw Bale Home, and has been a dedicated champion of natural building approaches for over two decades. Catherine is the proprietor of the Black Range Lodge, a historic bed-and-breakfast inn in the mountains of southwest New Mexico that is quickly gaining a reputation as a center for sustainable construction and healthy living.
