The New Victorians by Rene Denfeld

Denefield argues that the wholesale rejection of feminism is not because of some unconscious conspiracy in the media to undermine women, but because the women's movement does not offer what young women want. Instead of fighting to improve women's lives at a practical level, today's feminists have become obsessed with moral crusades such as the anti-pornography debate, and espouse radical stances such as separaitsm from men, in the workplace and in bed. Their doctrine imposes a puritanical sexual and social moral code, while teaching women that they are powerless to effect political change. In this book Denfield examines these politics, and their consequence both for womens rights and the women's movement, and demonstrates how they are recreating the era of 19th-century Victorianism, where women are spiritually and carnally pure and aloof from the "dirty" world of men.
