The eldest of seven children, Alexander Woolley did National Service in the Royal Artillery, followed by three years study at Balliol College, Oxford. Alexander later pursued courses at the Institute of Education, London, and at La Sorbonne, Paris. After retiring from teaching children, mostly of the 9-13 age group, in both State and Independent sectors, he went on to teach English as a Foreign Language in Oxford. He now lives in the Isle of Wight.
