New World by Jo Macauley

Fifteen-year-old Beth Johnson is a talented and beautiful young actress. She is also a spy. The year is 1666, and Henry Vale, the dangerous mastermind behind the plots to kill the King, is still on the loose. With reports coming in that he may be hiding out in the colony of America, Beth must decide how far she will go to track him down. Will Beth leave her life in London and make the voyage to the New World?
Beth Johnson, a beautiful, fifteen-year-old actress, and her young friend John Turner, a naval clerk, are also secret agents for the English throne, gathering information that will help defend King Charles against his many political enemiesIn Inferno, Beth, John, and their friend Ralph rescue John's kidnapped sister and foil a gunpowder plot against the monarchy. In New World, the friends survive a dangerous crossing of the Atlantic Ocean and make land in the Virginia colony. Each of the four titles in this series is loosely based on 17th-century English history. The first three entries, Treason, Plague, and Inferno, are set entirely in London; while the fourth, New World, begins in London before setting sail to the New World. Teen sleuths Beth and John, aided by colorful ex-criminal Ralph Chandler, work under cover for the King's spymaster, Sir Alan Strange. Their persistent opponent is Henry Vale, an anti-monarchist who seeks to end the reign of King Charles by any means necessary. Vale's conspiracies always feature the strong-arm tactics of his thuggish henchman, Groby. None of these characters are real historical persons, but the Restoration setting is genuine, featuring the Great Plague (1665) and Great Fire of London (1666), and the transportation of criminals to the American colonies. Throughout the series, John sustains a chaste crush on Beth, his fellow teen spy. Despite tangling with criminals, neither of the young heroes ever suffers more than bumps and bruises in these wholesome, historical fiction novels for middle school and early teen readers. -Walter Hogan * Voya *
