Nixon by Stephen E Ambrose

Stephen Ambrose, biographer of Dwight Eisenhower and author of "Nixon - The Education of a Politician" begins with Nixon's second drive for the presidency, which he launched at his "last press conference" on November 7 1963, after losing the race for the California governorship and takes us to an electoral triumph in 1972 when he is overwhelmingly re-elected. During his first term, Nixon accomplished an opening to China, detente with the USSR, the beginning of arms reduction. He had not ended the war in Vietnam, a war he had long known was unwinnable. He had accomplished much in foreign policy, with the help of his aide, Henry Kissinger, but had already stepped outside the law to launch an attack on his enemies. Ambrose's third volume will recount the final ordeal of Nixon as an elected official.
