No Place to Lie by Helen Garlick
On St David's Day 1981, Helen receives a phone call out of the blue in St Louis from her distraught father in Yorkshire, leading her to a heart-searing path of discovery. Her brother David's shocking death at only twenty years old in a remote country mansion triggers a lifelong quest to unravel truths long shrouded in secrets, buried in silence. Vividly evocative, Helen's debut memoir No Place to Lie takes the reader on an extraordinary journey through suicide, trauma and shame to shine a light on what really happened to her younger brother and the startling secret her mother took to her grave. Helen's courageous and uplifting book brings powerful messages about hope and survival, the healing power of talking, stepping towards recovery and connection to lead a life filled with humour, joy and love.
'A sibling's respectful, honest memoir of a lost brother and corroding family secrets' Libby Purves
Helen Garlick writes and speaks about the healing power of talking and connection. Hello! It's better to talk. Previously a well-known family lawyer/mediator and author of various books and textbooks on family matters, including The Which?
Guide to Divorce, Helen has appeared on TV, radio and podcasts. She has worked with thousands of clients to achieve amicable outcomes on separation and trained thousands of lawyers in constructive talking solutions, focusing on the family's best interests at heart. Helen spearheaded collaborative practice training for Resolution (First for Family Law) until 2020 and ran bespoke dispute resolution courses. From 2021 she will co-train with Barbara Mills QC on communication,
connection and peaceful conflict resolution.
From Yorkshire, Helen now lives in Sussex on the South Downs with her husband Tim. Mum of three, step mum of two. Surprisingly sober since she stepped back from legal practice to focus on writing (maybe that's no surprise at all), Helen will walk from Land's End to John O'Groats in 2023, fundraising for charities dedicated to suicide prevention and wellbeing, alongside Tim and their dogs Pippin and Ziggy Stardust. No Place to Lie is her debut memoir.
