This biography was written with unprecedented access to the private papers and correspondence of Coward family members, compatriots and lovers.Philip Hoare is the author of eight nonfiction books, one of which, The Whale, won the Samuel Johnson Award for Nonfiction in 2009. Hoare is a veteran broadcaster who is also a Visiting Fellow at Southampton University and a Leverhulme Artist-in-Residence at Plymouth University's Marine Institute, where he received an honorary doctorate in 2011. He is a Southampton resident.
