Noritake Collectibles A to Z by David Spain
Indisputably the largest and most comprehensive book available on Noritake, more than 1,000 pieces in classical, Art Nouveau, and Art Deco styles with both luster and non-luster finishes are presented, as well as a wide variety of post-war bone china figurines and recent collector-series items such as Valentine's Day hearts and Easter eggs. The time span covered is greater than any other book in this field, including non-dinnerware Noritake-marked porcelains made between 1908-1995. Most of the items presented in this comprehensive volume have never before been seen in books on this subject. Chapters reviewing the history of the Noritake Company and trends in Noritake collecting, as well as photos of extremely rare pages from Noritake sales books are included. A comprehensive essay regarding the identification of Noritake backstamps with exclusive full-color photos of each stamp round out the book. The high-quality photographic materials are very clearly and carefully organized, making the book extremely easy to use as a reference tool for both novices and experts.David Spain is a cultural anthropologist by trade. He earned his Ph.D. in 1969. Northwestern University awarded him a bachelor's degree in anthropology. He has conducted extensive research in Africa on multiple occasions in this regard. He's also a Seattle Institute of Psychoanalysis graduate.
He is not, however, an analyst; instead, he is a Professor of Anthropology at the University of Washington, where he has worked since 1968. In 1989, he and a former colleague, Mike Owen, founded Noritake News, a quarterly newspaper aimed towards collectors and dealers of Noritake items other than tableware, such as those featured in this book. David continues to serve as editor of this newspaper, which has subscribers from Japan, England, Canada, and Australia in addition to many in the United States.
He also played a key role in the establishment of the Noritake Collectors' Society, a non-profit organization founded in 1996. He lives in Seattle with his family.
