North Facing by Tony Peake
When Paul Harvey - sensitive, isolated and desperate to fit in at school - is invited to join the most popular pupil's gang, he will do whatever is required to please the ringleader Andre du Toit. Now a man in his sixties and living abroad, Paul is drawn back to Pretoria to revisit his boyhood home. It has taken him most of his life to grasp and make sense of his past: the other boys, the masters, his own and du Toit's parents, who so puzzlingly populated and controlled his world.Tony Peake is the author of three novels: A Summer Tide (Abacus, 1993), Son to the Father (Little, Brown, 1995), and North Facing (Myriad Editions, 2017), as well as the authoritative biography of Derek Jarman (Little, Brown, 1999). His work has been regularly anthologized as a short story writer and occasional essayist, most recently in Best British Short Stories 2016, and he edited a collection of short stories on the theme of seduction (Serpent's Tail, 1994). Tony was born in South Africa but went to London after graduating from Rhodes University and working as a production manager at the Open Space Theatre. After teaching English, History, and Drama on the island of Ibiza, she returned to the UK and worked in modeling, acting, and film distribution. He has worked as a literary agent for the past 30 years. He has some teaching experience and is conversant with many elements of writing and the publishing industry in general.
