The author of this book spent three years as head of the embassy of Sweden in Pyongyang. Until a few years ago, it was the only Western embassy in North Korea. A picture is drawn of a society and a political order that defy both human nature and common sense.Erik Cornell opened the Embassy of Sweden in North Korea in 1975 and served there as Charge d'Affaires until 1977. He commissioned into the Royal Sea Life Guards in 1953 before entering the University of Stockholm, where he gained a Masters Degree in Political Science. He joined the Swedish Royal Ministory for Foreign Affairs in 1958 and has served in Bonn, Warsaw, Addis Ababa, Rome and Pyongyang. He was appointed Ambassador to West Africa in 1982 and to Turkey from 1990-95. He is author of Turkey in the Twenty-First Century, Curzon Press 2001.
