Eliza Orzeszkowa (1841-1910) was a prolific and well-known Polish prose writer in the nineteenth century. In 1905 and 1909, she was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature. Her impact on the literary scene in Poland was significant. With her literary and social justice activities, she influenced Stefan Żeromski, Wladyslaw Reymont, Maria Dąbrowska, and many other Polish female writers. Most of the post-1863 Uprising Polish women's writing was published under Orzeszkowa's encouragement and guidance, since she was the most well admired and recognized Polish woman writer at the time.
