Observations on the River Wye by William Gilpin
William Gilpin (1724-1804) started travelling in search of picturesque scenes in the 1770's and his five books of journeys evaluate every scene with critical rigour. To read Gilpin today is to enter an entirely eighteenth century world. This book, the first of the five books, includes all plates in what is considered to be their best state.
In its first publication since 1820, Observations on the River Wye is the work that launched the picturesque movement in art, changing forever our ways of looking at the landscape
