Dr. Johanna BUDWIG was born in Germany in 1908 and became one of the first researchers to decisively link the role of essential fats in illness prevention and cure in the male-dominated field of science. She got a Ph.D. in physics after studying pharmacy, chemistry, and medicine, and in the 1940s and 1950s, she worked on studies to detect, isolate, and identify fatty compounds in human blood. Dr. Budwig compared the blood tests of thousands of healthy people to those suffering from degenerative diseases like cancer, diabetes, and liver disease. The results were ground-breaking. The afflicted individuals were low in various dietary elements, particularly the important fatty acid linoleic acid, according to Dr. Budwigs' test results.

These patients also lacked the phosphatide and lipoprotein levels required for optimum health. She came to the conclusion that sulfur-based proteins, required fatty acids, and phosphatide are all essential for the development and maintenance of healthy cells. Dr. Budwig lived well into her nineties, and her unwavering commitment to nutrition research led to her being nominated for the Nobel Prize seven times over her long and successful scientific career.
