Old Age by Helen M Luke

In this classic text on ageing wisely, the renowned Jungian analyst Helen M. Luke reflects on the final journeys described in Homer's Odyssey, Shakespeare's King Lear, and T.S. Eliot's Little Gidding, as well as devoting attention to suffering. In examining some of the great masterpieces of literature produced by writers at the end of their lives, she elucidates the difference between growing old and disintegrating, encouraging the reader to grow emotionally and mentally during the final stage of life.

'Better to spend a day meditating on a single page of her writing than to read a stack of books on enlightenment'
-- Thomas Moore, author of Care of the Soul and The Planets Within

'Helen Luke is a unique voice that carries beautiful passion, feeling, and clarity. She is clearly one of our most precious national treasures.'
-- Helen Pinkola Estes, author of Women Who Run with the Wolves

Helen M. Luke was born in England in 1904. In mid-life she studied at the Jung Institute in Zurich, then moved to the US and established an analytical practice with Robert Johnson in Los Angeles. In 1962, she founded the Apple Farm Community in Three Rivers Michigan, "a center for people seeking to discover and appropriate the transforming power of symbols in their lives." In her later years, Helen Luke was the model wise woman for many people. She died in 1995 at the age of 93, at Apple Farm.
