He worked as Hilbert's assistant here. Courant left Germany for England in 1933, and after a year there, he moved to the United States. He became a lecturer at New York University in 1936.

He was Director of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, which was later called the Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, and he oversaw the Department of Mathematics. Courant is most known for his work on the finite element approach, which he established on a solid mathematical foundation and which is now the most prominent method for numerically solving partial differential equations.
