On 27 March 1871 Frederick Stokes led England out at Raeburn Place, Edinburgh for the first rugby union international. That Scotland defeated the visitors is a matter of record but since that landmark date England have played over 600 capped matches and 121 players have followed in Stokes' footsteps. Some experienced extraordinary success while for others the journey was often short and disappointing.
