One Night Stands by Michael Billington
Michael Billington's own selection from 20 years of reviewing for "The Guardian" - from 1971, with Ralph Richardson in John Osborne's "West of Suez" and Olivier in "Long Day's Journey into Night", through two decades of theatrical events such as Ken Dodd, "Amadeus" and Peter Hall's National, up to "Carmen Jones" and the new David Hare of 1991. Chronologically arranged with a 5000-word introduction on the critic's role, his reviews and "think pieces" add up to an authoritative, yet personal history of the theatre of our generation.Since 1971, Michael Billington has been the Guardian's theater reviewer, and since 1986, he has been the critic for Country Life. He has written biographies of Harold Pinter and Peggy Ashcroft, as well as critical assessments of Tom Stoppard and Alan Ayckbourn. He is a Visiting Professor at King's College, London, and an Honorary Fellow of St Catherine's College, Oxford, and talks and broadcasts frequently on the arts. He also teaches drama at the University of Pennsylvania and is a Visiting Professor at King's College, London.
